Jane Schoenbrun’s ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ Is an Act of Love

Few experiences have left me as unmoored as seeing I Saw The TV Glow at a 10 AM press screening. The film circles the story of Owen (played by Ian Foreman and Justice Smith), a shy boy growing up in dreary suburbia who finds solace and companionship through a Buffy-esque procedural, The Pink Opaque, introduced to him by an older confidante, the brooding Maddie (Brigette Lundy-Paine). As the pair find themselves increasingly enthralled by the show’s strange magic, they also find themselves trapped in its creeping limbo.

Art, especially for queer and trans youth, can serve as a life-saving escape. But just exactly where does that escape lead to? A vast expanse to roam, or a cell, locked and put away? As I watched the film, the echoes of months spent wasting in my bedroom as a young boy, listening to music, retreating into the digital, rang around my skull. “When I think about that stuff, I feel like someone took a shovel and dug out my insides,” Owen says in response to Maddie questioning his sexuality. “I know there’s nothing there, but I’m still too nervous to open myself up to check.”

In just two films, Schoenbrun has shown themself to be one of the great articulators of the deep dread and longing that defines so much of queer and trans adolescence. In their first film, the microbudget We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, a young teenager’s reality begins to disintegrate after she becomes obsessed with an online role-playing game. Like I Saw The TV Glow, the film brings to light the natural horror that can arise when isolation and escape ferment to something more akin to rotted sequestration. That Schoenbrun continues to explore such themes is a gift.

A giddy gratitude permeated I Saw The TV Glow’s premiere, a collaboration between A24 and Rooftop Films at Powerhouse Arts in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The film’s cast hobnobbed with collaborators and admirers alike, alongside some of indie music’s best. The film was scored by stalwart musician Alex G, but also flexes original songs from the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Caroline Polacheck, Yeule and Sloppy Jane, whose lead singer, Haley Dahl, was at the premier alongside Kyp Malone (TV on the Radio), cast member Lindsey Jordan (Snail Mail) and L’Rain (Taja Cheek) who DJed the event. Check out exclusive photos of the event below.

PAPER caught Schoenbrun the morning before I Saw The TV Glow’s premiere to chat about the challenges of discussing the film, the emotional process behind writing and making it and the experience of curating a perfect mixtape.

It must have been heavy to make this film, but I imagine that now talking about it with the press ad nauseum is a whole other beast. How’s that’s been for you?

The only way I can survive a press tour like his one is by treating it as some weird combination of therapy and writing my memoir. The film is still just coming out, but I’ve been talking about it for a while now. I find myself just shit-talking movies that I don’t like, or talking about my experience making the movie as much as I’m talking about what the movie is about. That’s the way that it’s like therapy: I’m unpacking the strangeness of it all through the press.

[But as for the film itself], it’s a film that I wrote while going through some really intense things. It’s the film that I wrote very early in my physical transition, and while dealing with the fallout of the immediate catastrophe that is your life when you come out. By the time I made the film, two years after I wrote it, I was in such a different place. And I was in this early honeymoon phase with my new identity. You inevitably will change from the person you were when you wrote the film, but, in this film, I feel like it’s been so much more pronounced. It almost feels like I was catching up on 20 years of growth that I didn’t get to do pre-transition.

How did you show up to set every day and not just be riddled with those feelings?

I tried to conjure those feelings, honestly. One of the joys of production is making something beautiful and joyful. And I think the film is representative of this different person I became in the years between writing and filming. It’s just such a glittering, colorful movie, with so many flickers of queer joy in it. And that was me in the present tense as I was shooting the movie.

I spent a few days alone before we started production. I left my phone at home and went to the cemetery around my house and brooded around and thought through the movie and tried to tap back into those extremely raw feelings that the script was born from — from my early transition and this cataclysm of emotion. It was nice that I moved past it and could direct from it a bit. I think I did capture something within that moment, but I’m also glad to not still be living in that moment.

In the film, this joy you mention feels really complicated, be it the joy of watching television, or in the joyous escape of being in a DIY music space. Tell me about the push and pull of how you depict joy here.

The movie is a reflection on growing up in the suburbs as a queer person and searching for spaces that feel like home. I think that’s a complex experience. Even if that place [you find joy in] is a TV show that you’re watching, that’s still a corporate product. Even if it’s feeding you some sort of magical queer-coded signal, it’s not necessarily liberatory. But it can feel soothing to tap into.

I thought of the movie as all about finding places to hide before you’re ready to come out of the closet. [In the film] Owen and Maddie are gravitating towards these hidden places in suburbia where they can feel more at home: that could be a TV show, that could be underneath a parachute, that can be inside a goth club on the outskirts of town. Throughout the movie, these spaces are almost becoming mutated or contaminated and the spaces that were once refuges or places to hide start to become more like prisons by the end of the movie.

I want to talk about the end of the movie, because I feel like it’s one of the more surprising ends we’ve seen in contemporary cinema. I’m curious about the process for you in shaping that ending. How did you figure out where the story would go?

I think that the movie is about half of someone’s life, and in this sense half of my life, spent doing everything I could to repress and avoid a thing that, once I finally saw it, was both liberatory and absolutely terrifying. Once you see a thing you can’t unsee, which was in my case, transness, you’re faced with two bad options. One is likely social death and estrangement from everything that you’ve thought of as reality. And the other is continuing to live a life that isn’t yours and isn’t right. And that’s just an incredibly heavy and overwhelming thing. For me, as a child of the 1990s in suburbia, in this very homogenized and mono-cultural place, I was always told in school that I could be anything I wanted, but they definitely didn’t mean trans. There was just this instinct to apologize for existing and apologize for being my true self that was instilled in me from the youngest age. This is a movie about seeing this thing that is inside you, that despite your attempts to distance yourself from, is unavoidable and inevitable.

To then take that narrative beyond that, towards a more traditionally cathartic, Hollywood, trans kind of narrative, like, Oh, and now we live happily ever after in the right body and soul! would be so disrespectful to my lived experience. You get to the beginning of transition, where there is already so much damage that has already been done, and then the work becomes healing. That’s how I like to think of transition, I don’t so much use the word “transition” in my own understanding of my own gender exploration. I think of it as healing from that half of my life where I wasn’t myself and I was being told to be ashamed of my true self. I think that’s where we leave Owen in the movie, at the very beginning of that process.

A lot of young trans queer kids are going to be seeing this movie, which is, in many ways, about the perils of latching onto media. I’m wondering what your feelings are about a new generation encountering this movie and what it might mean and signify to them?

I think if the movie was as simple as saying, “Watch out for emotional attachments to media or fiction,” l would be doing a disservice to my own experience growing up. It was weird how attached I was to Buffy The Vampire Slayer. It was weird how I basically put all of my emotional energy and love into that television show instead of my own life, but it was a coping mechanism. It was similar with the hug that Elliott Smith’s music gave me growing up, or any of the other music that got me through my teens. I feel like I owe my life to that experience in so many ways. It’s amazing to be a full person now and to not need to clutch so tightly onto fiction or expressions of a lack, that I’m listening to to make me feel less alone. I am very happy to be less dissociative now and less cripplingly attached to fiction. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t still look to art and media for something to make me feel less alone or to help me understand myself or the magic of the world. I have such a deep belief in that in terms of my own art. I am trying to make art for a 16-year-old me. I don’t want kids rewatching I Saw the TV Glow for the next 20 years instead of transitioning, if that’s the choice, but I do hope that the film can be meaningful. Otherwise, it just wouldn’t be worth the energy and the emotional expense of opening yourself up like this. I think of it as an act of love and care and I hope it can be that for people.

I think it certainly will, as will the soundtrack. I can’t remember the last time there was a soundtrack that I wanted to listen to in my day-to-day like this.

I worked really hard to make a great fucking soundtrack that would be something that I would be obsessed with as a teenager, so I really hope that it can be that for folks as well.

What was the process of assembling it? And what were the conversations you were having as you put it together?

It was a lot of care, you know. I had never curated what I thought of as a mixtape from scratch, but I knew how to work with a bunch of other artists. And give them some oversight on what they’re doing and the vibe. I did as much as each artist wanted me to do, like making them mixes and talking to them about influences, but I just gave each artist what they needed to write a beautiful song that could fit as part of this larger piece. And then I just obsessively listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times and curated the track listing. I think of my filmmaking almost as mixtape-making in a way. I’m very obsessive when it comes to the experience of the thing. And a lot of care went into this.

This is your second film working with Alex G, which is such a cool collaboration. What’s that kind of creative collaboration been like for you, and how did that start?

It’s so amazing. I constantly wake up, and I’m like, “I can’t believe I get to work with Alex. I think he’s like one of the most talented living artists and musicians. I’m in awe of watching him work, it’s like total magic to me. I’ll give him a little bit of guiding direction and he’ll just disappear for 30 minutes and come back with the most beautiful thing I’ve ever listened to.

He said a nice thing to me, he was like, “I feel like you and I get along because we both kind of want to fuck it up. I can do a lot of things, but I can’t do it right. I can’t do Hans Zimmer.” Which I think is wrong, I think he could do Hans Zimmer. But I think he really likes fucking it up on purpose, of music being a little off or a little chopped and screwed. I think that’s very compatible with the type of filmmaking that I find myself drawn to. He’s just such a generous collaborator. I really do love building a filmography that speaks to itself and I love that these first two movies have had so much of his DNA in there.

Chris Hemsworth ‘p****d off’ after everyone thought he had Alzheimer’s and was quitting Hollywood

Two years ago, Chris Hemsworth, 40, was reportedly leaving Hollywood behind to process a shocking Alzheimer’s revelation.

However, this was never actually the case and instead, a bizarre misunderstanding where his planned time off was conflated with a discovery of a genetic risk factor.

While filming his documentary series Limitless for National Geographic, the Thor star underwent genetic testing which revealed he carried two copies of the APOE4 gene.

This gene has been flagged as a marker of risk for developing Alzheimer’s but is not a diagnosis in itself but the story began to spiral.

‘It really kind of p**sed me off because it felt like I had been vulnerable with something personal and shared this,’ he revealed to Vanity Fair.

‘No matter how much I said “This is not a death sentence,” the story became that I have dementia and I’m reconsidering life and retiring and so on.’

Alzheimer’s disease is where the brain function deteriorates as cells shrink and die, impacting someone’s memory, thinking, behaviours and social skills.

The VF cover star reiterated that he is not retiring any time soon, having moved back home to Byron Bay, Australia, to spend more time with his family.

His family, including model wife Elsa Pataky and their three kids, relocated down under in 2015 while Marvel-mania was in full swing.

Chris found Hollywood a head trip as he would simultaneously wonder if he was overexposed but not famous enough.

While the Furiosa: Mad Max actor has had an impressive career so far he is looking at taking it all more seriously, as long as he doesn’t turn into an ‘overly self-important pretentious w***er’ in the process.

Despite having his gripes about the Alzheimer’s speculation, Chris did note that there was one ‘really funny’ comment at the bottom of an article.

He shared: ‘I hope Chris forgets he’s retiring and comes back.’

When the Extraction star first got the news, he overhauled his health and focused on his brain rather than brawn – although that’s not to say he’s let go of his six-pack.

Looking back on his blockbuster career so far, Chris also lamented the type-casting he has faced since moving from Aussie soaps to Marvel’s then-fledgling universe.

He felt he was type-cast as the muscly action hero, which often have few internal complexities to work through, except for in Rush and now the Mad Max sequel.

Workouts shifted to target cardio fitness rather than pure muscle building, giving better all-around health results for the God of Thunder.

Previously, Chris has confessed how the news made him think more about his family life and how he wants to soak in the time with his kids.

In 2012, Elsa gave birth to their daughter India, 11, then two years later they welcomed twin sons Tristan and Sasha, nine.

Everyone’s favourite cheese toastie blowtorcher Brooklyn Beckham has been back in the kitchen.

This time, he made burgers… and they’re being compared to McDonald’s (not in the complimentary sense).

The 25-year-old has caught plenty of heat online in recent years for his culinary, erm, skills.

Whether he’s making pasta inside a whole cheese wheel or drowning his chicken in avocado oil, the son of David and Victoria Beckham is an endless meme, with his latest dish causing a stir, once again, for the wrong reasons.

Taking to social media to showcase his latest creation, the budding chef whipped up a homemade burger and fries in a sponsorship with Chosen Foods.

‘Today I’m making a Flying Dutchman,’ he began in the video.

Brooklyn explained: ‘You first start off with grounding your meat, then we cut up some potatoes.

‘Next up is the onion. Two similar sizes so it can be replaced by the bun.’

The former photographer filled a saucepan with ‘pure avocado oil’, fried his potato chips, and tossed them with salt before draining them.

Then came time to plate up his burgers.

As he did so, viewers noticed that not only had he used ‘the wrong type of potato’, but he was also cheating with processed cheese slices.

Nevertheless, he was proud of his creation and facing the inevitable wrath of the internet didn’t deter Brooklyn from sharing the ‘tutorial’ with his 16.4million followers.

People were still incredibly savage in the comments, though.

Instagram user rhona4804 wrote: ‘He could get a job at McDonald’s’.

marycee13 commented: ‘No not the processed cheese slices’.

‘Not the right kind of potato to make fries’, blasted milliciously_me.

Dragging Posh Spice into their criticism, abazilindita wrote: ‘Victoria would throw that in the rubbish right away’.

Surprisingly, though, there was a decent amount of praise for ar Brooklyn too.

Fans defended him from the barrage of hate, hailing his burger as ‘delicious’ and urging trolls to leave him be.

He was also supported by his number one cheerleader, dad David, who reposted the clip to his Story with the text: ‘My boy just loves to cook. Just like his dad’.

VB also joked: ‘He gets it from me!’

Brooklyn’s latest dish comes after he responded to being the subject of criticism online with a totally unbothered attitude.

In a recent interview with Insider, Brooklyn declared that he ‘works [his] bum off’.

He said: ‘To be honest, I’m used to the hate. It doesn’t really bother me. Cooking makes me happy.

‘I have more important things to worry about than people saying a little bit of rubbish about me… I’m doing my thing and working my bum off.’

The nepo baby added: ‘To be honest, I’m used to the hate. It doesn’t really bother me. Cooking makes me happy. I have more important things to worry about than people saying a little bit of rubbish about me.’

When asked what he wishes to say to the haters, Brooklyn replied defiantly: ‘My message to them is to keep writing whatever they want to write. There are always going to be people out there who try and pull you down.

‘I’m doing my thing and working my bum off. So they can keep writing what they want, but it’s not going to bother me — I’m just going to keep doing my thing.’

Michael Flatley feared ‘muscly guys’ discovering dance secret after being ‘terribly bullied’

Before he was a riverdance superstar, Michael Flatley was working on a building site – but he had no desire to tell his fellow construction workers about his love of dance.

The Lord of the Dance performer, 65, has said he feared being mocked by his co-workers after negative experiences and ‘terrible bullying’ in the past.

Fortunately for Flatley, he had the last laugh.

He was launched to stardom in the Irish dancing production Riverdance, which was first performed as a break in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994.

Flatley then went on to create the megahit stage show Lord of the Dance.

In a new interview, the performer reflected on his roots and how the reception to his talents was more magical than he ever expected it to be.

‘We nailed it, my dream,’ he began to the BBC.

‘For years, I was working on construction sites and digging foundations in Chicago. During those freezing cold winters, I was creating those steps, in my dance style, in my mind that whole time.

‘That’s what got me through the hard, laborious work.’

When asked if he shared his passion for dance with his fellow employees, he laughed it off.

‘No! The big, muscly guys? Better not mention that I’m dreaming about dancing, probably not the right thing to do.’

We wonder what those ‘big, muscly guys’ would have to say now, given that his shows have played to more than 60million people in 60 countries and have grossed more than $1billion (£798,100).

While audiences have been wowed the world over thanks to Flatley’s stunning dancing, he didn’t have the easiest start.

Michael was catapulted to fame in the Irish dancing production Riverdance, which was first performed as a break in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994. He then went on to create the megahit stage show Lord Of The Dance.

‘I got bullied at school terribly, so I know what young lads go through and it’s trying, it’s mentally difficult, it’s stressful to have to walk into school and hope somebody doesn’t say something negative to you,’ he shared.

Having paved the way, Flatley hopes that he will have made life a bit easier for boys who also want to dance.

‘If you look at our dancers now in Lord of the Dance, the men are so powerfully built, they’ve taken it to a whole new level.’

His candid discussion comes one year after Flatley revealed his devastating cancer diagnosis.

Last January, he shared his ‘aggressive’ illness with the world not long after undergoing treatment for the disease.

He praised the ‘excellent team of doctors’ who had looked after him.

A statement shared on his Instagram page said at the time: ‘Dear friends, we have something personal to share, Michael Flatley has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

‘He has undergone surgery and is in the care of an excellent team of doctors. No further comments will be made at this time. We ask only for your prayers and well wishes. Thank you. 🙏🏻 Teamlord’.

Brian Cox blames the Bible for ‘propaganda’ and claims it is ‘the worst book ever’

Brian Cox
Actor Brian Cox has slammed the Bible (Picture: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for HBO)

Brian Cox isn’t a fan of the Bible and shan’t be giving it a glowing review on Goodreads anytime soon.

In fact, he reckons it’s ‘one of the worst books ever’.

The 77-year-old actor has has insisted religion ‘holds us back’ as humans, and blamed narratives in the Bible for society’s patriarchy.

‘We do because we have to honour them and we have to give them their place and we’re resistant to that because all our… it’s Adam and Eve, I mean, the propaganda goes right way back – the Bible is one of the worst books ever, for me, from my point of view,’ he said.

Cox continued on The Starting Line Podcast: ‘Because it starts with the idea that Adam’s rib – you know, that [from] Adam’s rib, this woman was created, and they’ll believe it cause they’re stupid enough.’

The Succession star argued that religion distracts people from who they truly are.

‘They’re not dealing with who we are, we’re dealing with, “Oh if God says this and God does that”, and you go, “Well, what is God?”

“We’ve created that idea of God, and we’ve created it as a control issue, and it’s also a patriarchal issue. and it’s essentially patriarchal – we haven’t given enough scope to the matriarchy.”

He pointed to the biological differences between men and women when it comes to their role in parenthood.

Cox noted that ‘the mothering thing is the thing which is the real conditioning of our lives’, whereas ‘our fathers don’t condition ourselves because they’re too bloody selfish, but our mothers have to, because they have an umbilical – that’s what the umbilical cord is about.’

‘Even though it’s cut away, there’s an umbilical relationship to your child, and the women have that, men do not have that, they’re just sperm banks,’ he explained.

Although Cox admitted spiritual people do need a guide or some kind, he insisted they shouldn’t look to the Bible for an answer.

He declared that they ‘don’t need to be told lies’, but ‘need some kind of truth’.

‘And that is not the truth.’

‘It is not the truth, it’s a mythology, you know?’, he stated. ‘It’s not really to do with what women understand more than anybody.’

The Scottish-born TV star has been hailed as one of the country’s ‘greatest living national treasures’ in recent times, particularly following an appearance on Newsnight.

Closing out 2023 in explicit style, he stunned BBC viewers by dropping an F-bomb in a nod to his Succession character.

Messy Met Gala? A-list guest list reveals potential frosty encounters with feuding stars

There could be some uncomfortable encounters at this year’s Met Gala… (Picture: Getty)

Anyone who is anyone attends the Met Gala, meaning it’s the prime place for an awkward celebrity run-in.

From Taylor Swift to Justin Bieber, this year’s guest list has been ‘revealed’ and we’re already preparing the popcorn in case any feuding stars have an uncomfortable encounter.

The theme of this year’s annual fashion extravaganza is The Garden of Time, which is inspired by the J.G. Ballard short story of the same name.

Meanwhile, the Costume Institute’s new exhibition is entitled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, with pieces pieces including designs by Schiaparelli, Dior, Givenchy, and more.

So, it’s fair to say we should expect plenty of OTT, fairytale-esque ensembles but with the likes of Cardi B and Nicki Minaj supposedly having received invites, the outfits might not be the only thing making headlines on May 6.

Let’s take a dive into this year’s attendees and which A-listers are at risk of an ugly bump-in.

Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian

Taylor Swift

Taylor and Kim’s beef is extremely well documented and if you’re a fan of either, you’re probably fully clued-up on the lore.

Flashback to 2009 and Kim was a huge Taylor fan, declaring that the number one song on her iPod was Love Story.

In September that year, however, Kanye West famously stormed the VMAs stage to declare that the then-country star wasn’t worthy of her award as Beyonce actually had ‘one of the best videos of all time.’

In true Taylor style, the Grammy winner proceeded to pour out her feelings on the shocking stage invasion in her music in years to come, before eventually burying the hatchet with Kanye and displaying a very public friendship from 2015.

The chronically online among you will remember that this did not last long…

Kim Kardashian

Kim, of course, went on to marry Kanye in 2014 and so played a huge part when he released his controversial track Famous in 2016.

Fuelling Taylor’s later reputation era, Kanye was slammed for including the lyric: ‘I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that b***h famous,’ in reference to his VMAs stunt.

What soon transpired was that while Kanye called Taylor to gain her seal of approval on the lyrics, she wasn’t made aware that she’d be branded a ‘b***h’.

Who are you excited to see at this year’s Met Gala?Comment Now

Oh, and the phone call was recorded by Kim, which the singer claims was edited by the reality star in a bid to make her appear more on board than she was.

In the years to follow, multiple sly digs were made by both parties and while Kim stated that everyone had ‘moved on’ in 2019, there hadn’t been any public apologies.

Of course, the full exchange between Kanye in the studio and Taylor on the phone leaked in 2020, proving the Look What You Made Me Do hitmaker right… even if Kanye still maintain that he gave the billionaire songstress a career boost.

As of 2024, Taylor and Kim are far from friends, despite the latter enduring a bitter divorce with the Donda rapper.

She even released a song targeting their beef on her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, titling it thanK you aIMee, capitalising the Skims founder’s name.

And that track is incredibly fresh, meaning a run-in at this year’s Met Gala would be far from welcome on either side…

Kendall Jenner and Bad Bunny

From a Kardashian to a Jenner, we have Kendall and her ex-boyfriend, Bad Bunny.

Kendall dated the Puerto Rican rapper for less than a year, parting ways in December according to sources.

The pair were last spotted together at the Saturday Night Live afterparty in October, when Bad Bunny celebrated his double duty after both hosting and performing as the musical guest.

And while their romance was said to have just been a bit of fun, they don’t appear to be in contact anymore.

An insider for Entertainment Tonight said: ‘Kendall and Bad Bunny have been doing their own things lately, and things slowly started to fizzle out between them.

It’s said they knew their romance wasn’t a forever thing (Picture: Mike Coppola/Getty Images)

‘They both knew going into this that it likely wouldn’t be a forever type of relationship, and that was mutually understood from the get-go.

‘They have crazy-busy schedules and know they’re still young and have a lot more to experience individually before settling down.’

While there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood, we can’t imagine either jumping for joy at the prospect of a Met Gala reunion.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber

Selena Gomez

Famously dubbed ‘Jelena’, Selena and Justin began dating in 2010 (no, we can’t believe it was that long ago either).

It wasn’t until a year later that the lovebirds confirmed they were an item, with a string of PDAs and joint red carpet appearances to come.

Alas, the youngsters first split in 2012, with the Biebs confirming in 2013 that they were no longer talking.

2014 is when things got confusing, as the Baby hitmaker was linked to Hailey Baldwin, but soon appeared to have reconciled with Selena.

Nicknamed ‘the lost Jelena years’, most of 2015 was unclear concerning their relationship status. They both dated other stars but were seen together and sparked romance rumours several times.

It wasn’t until 2017 that Jelena was confirmed once more, but it was off a year later.

While Justin is now happily married to Hailey – and she and Selena are pals despite the internet pitting them against one another – there have been plenty of sly comments made over the years.

So, with Selena now dating Benny Blanco and the Biebers expected on the Met red carpet arm-in-arm, it probably wouldn’t be the best place for a catch-up.

Kylie Jenner vs Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift

Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner is always a topic of conversation at the Met Gala (Picture: Gotham/Getty Images)

We know, it’s hard to keep up.

At the Golden Globes earlier this year, the internet was convinced Taylor and Selena – aka Taylena – were gossiping about Kylie Jenner and her new boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet.

Long-time besties Taylor and Selena were seen enjoying a good gossip, as besties do, but it sparked rumours that Selena was shading Kylie for ‘not allowing’ her to say hello to Timmy.

Fed up with being the focus of speculation, Selena later clarified via Instagram what they were discussing.

‘Nooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up’, she commented on E News’ post about the conversation.

Cooly, the singer made her thoughts on the subject clear as she added: ‘Not that it’s anyone’s business.’

Fans weren’t convinced, though, and the lip readers were out in full force…

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj
Will Nicki Minaj have any awkward encounters (Picture: Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue)

They may be the two queens of rap, but Cardi and Nicki aren’t BFFs.

They’ve supported one another’s tunes in the past, but things turned especially sour in 2018 at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party during New York Fashion Week, with a confrontation following Nicki ‘talking smack’ about Cardi’s baby with Offset (which she denied).

The WAP rapper unleashed a brutal Instagram rant, writing: ‘I’ve let a lot of s**t slide! I let you sneak diss me, I let you lie on me, I let you attempt to stop my bags, f**k up the way I eat! You’ve threaten other artists in the industry, told them if they work with me you’ll stop f***ing with them!! I let you talk big s— about me!!’

Cardi B

A truce was called but it didn’t last as, just weeks later, Nicki appeared to diss Cardi in a song… with the Bodak Yellow rapper then featuring on Meek Mill’s Championships album, who is Nicki’s ex.

It’s unclear what stage the two rap titans are at as of 2024, but while they haven’t publicly feuded for a while, who knows what could happen at the Met after a few drinks…

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson

Ariana Grande
Might Ethan Slater accompany Ariana Grande this time? (Picture: Neilson Barnard/Getty Images)

Of course, Ariana Grande is currently dating Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, but she was famously in a relationship with Pete from 2018 until, well, 2018.

Their romance was just months long but it was the very definition of a whirlwind, as Pete got tatted in honour of Ari, while she named a whole song after him on her Sweetener album.

Oh, they were also engaged to be married.

Sadly, Ariana’s grief following the death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, seemed to contribute to her engagement’s demise, with Pete saying in 2020 that he ‘pretty much knew it was around over after that’, despite supporting her where he could.

He went on to speak positively about her publicly, reflecting fondly on their timetogether, as did Ari, who married Dalton Gomez in 2021 before splitting two years later.

In true Pete Davidson style, the comedian has been linked to a string of famous women since splitting from the Grammy winner, having romanced everyone from Emily Ratajkowski to Kim Kardashian herself.

Sure, a Met Gala run-in might be laughter-filled, it might not be the best setting after all those years apart.

Dua Lipa and the Hadids

Anwar Hadid and Dua Lipa

Pop icon Dua famously dated model Anwar Hadid from 2019 until 2021, with their relationship inspiring some of her biggest tunes.

During their time together, Dua also, understandably, became close with his famous sisters, Gigi and Bella.

Alas, those friendships don’t seem to have lasted beyond Dua and Anwar’s romance.

After more than two years of dating, a source close to the Hadids told People that the couple were taking a break.

‘Dua and Anwar are currently taking a break from their relationship and are spending time apart. They’re figuring things out right now.’

Irina Shayk and Gigi Hadid

There’s no doubt in our mind that both models Irina and Gigi are girls’ girls.

However, with Gigi currently dating Irina’s ex, Bradley Cooper, a chance encounter at the Met Gala would certainly make for some interesting headlines.

Actor Bradley and runway star Gigi were photographed together multiple times earlier this year and sources have described their relationship as ‘casual’ with ‘attraction’ there.

A source spoke to Entertainment Tonight in October about how Irina felt about the new romance.

Gigi Hadid

She is said to ‘has ‘have no issue with Bradley dating others, especially while things are still casual between Bradley and Gigi.’

‘Everyone is mostly open to their former partners moving on,’ the source added.

Iconic Hollywood actress, 88, looks sprightly walking with cane in rare sighting

This legendary actress’s appearance was like a spoonful of sugar for her fans (Picture: Splash News)

A true legend of the screen, Dame Julie Andrews appeared in high spirits as she made an increasingly rare public appearance on Monday.

The Mary Poppins star, 88, was snapped as she enjoyed a shopping trip in the Hamptons, New York, with the aid of a walking stick.

Oscar winner Dame Julie has not been pictured in several months, but the actress looked sprightly as she negotiated herself into a car with a smile on her face.

She looked fashionable in black trousers and a spotless white blazer, which she paired with a cream T-shirt, statement stud earrings and comfortable black slip-on trainers.

In her left hand she wielded a stick to lean on, when necessary.

She was also accompanied by a friend assisting her as she got into the waiting vehicle, as well as a man who shielded her with an umbrella from possible inclement weather – as well as perhaps overly enthusiastic fans.

The star’s career of over 70 years has kept her in the spotlight for many decades, thanks to her successes in the West End and on Broadway with the likes of The Boy Friend and My Fair Lady, where she originated the role of Eliza Doolittle opposite Rex Harrison.

While she may have missed out on the part for the movie adaptation, which instead went to Audrey Hepburn, she instead made her feature film debut in Mary Poppins in 1964, for which she won the best actress Academy Award.

Have your say in the comments belowComment Now

She was also on hand last year to appear in a television special celebrating her co-star Dick Van Dyke’s 98th birthday.

The next year, she played Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, another beloved and successful musical which netted her a Golden Globe and another Oscar nomination.

The intervening years have included Thoroughly Modern Millie, Torn Curtain and Victor/Victoria – which brought her third best actress Oscar nod in 1983.

In more recent years, she’s enjoyed big success with a younger generation thanks to her appearances as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries and its sequel.

Although star Anne Hathaway has recently confirmed that the team was ‘in a good place’ with development on a threequel, the last update from Dame Julie suggested she might not be involved.

‘I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,’ the star said back in December 2022. ‘It was talked about very shortly after [the sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then?

‘I’m that much older and Annie, the princess – or queen – is so much older and I’m not sure whether it would float or run.’

When the idea of a reboot was suggested, she agreed to Access Hollywood: ‘Well maybe, yes. But in terms of us doing it, I very much doubt that now.

‘Something, we’ll do together, I hope. She’s a great friend.’

With things looking more possible now on the third film’s front, we hope it’s a case of never say never for the Despicable Me voice star’s involvement.

Dame Julie has also enjoyed further adulation thanks to her pitch-perfect performance as the Lady Whistledown narrator for Netflix’s hit period drama Bridgerton, returning next month for its third season.

However, she revealed that she does her work ‘far, far away’ from the action.

‘Shonda Rhimes and the whole gang down, they’re terrific,’ Dame Julie told presenter Hoda Kotb on The Today Show in 2022.

‘It’s a joy and I’m thrilled that they asked me.

‘But I’ve never met the company in person. Of course, I see them on the show sometimes. But I do all my own recording far far away from them.’

When asked what she thinks of the smash-hit, Dame Julie responded: ‘I think it’s gorgeous looking and they’re all wonderful in it and they’re lovely people to work with.’

Barbra Streisand leaves the internet aghast with unhinged weight loss comment on Melissa McCarthy’s post

Melissa McCarthy and Barbra Streisand
Melissa McCarthy received a very brazen comment on her social media post thanks to Barbra Streisand (Picture: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for BSB)

It appears Barbra Streisand might need to be reminded of the differences between Instagram comments and Instagram DMs.

The showbiz legend left the internet aghast when she very publicly asked actress Melissa McCarthy if she had taken Ozempic.

Controversial drug Ozempic is actually a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, but it has hit the headlines in recent years after A-listers started using it to shed a few pounds.

Now, Melissa, 53, has never declared herself an Ozempic user but, given how her weight has fluctuated over the years, Barbra reckoned it was appropriate to quiz her on her methods – and the memes write themselves.

Melissa took to Instagram with a photo of herself and pal Adam Shankman at the CTG The Gala in Los Angeles, looking stunning wearing a ruffled mint dress and blazer.

Hair billowing in the wind, the snap was high glam and showcased Melissa’s trim physique.

Keen to point this out, musician Barbra, 82, wrote in the comments: Give him my regards did you take Ozempic?’

Her brazen remark seems to have now been deleted but where social media exists, so do screenshots.

Reposting the comment online, X user LucaGuadagnegro hailed the ‘unfiltered’ comment as ‘incredible’.

‘Barbra Streisand commenting “did you take Ozempic” on Melissa McCarthy’s latest insta today is one of the most insane things I’ve ever seen’, wrote LizArcury.

‘Omg. I think she thought this was a DM ?’, posted notcapnamerica.

‘Nah that’s just how boomers use social media’, joked LDBlondePod in reply.

‘Barbra put the phone down’, mocked kay_unwritten.

Viraltitokvids stated that ‘boomers on Instagram cannot be trusted’ whilepontifucc compared the shocking remark to ‘my mother on Facebook’.

Others have urged the Oscar winner’s team to ‘take her phone away’ but, honestly, if these are the unhinged comments she leaves when her social media usage isn’t monitored, we’re not going to stop her.

Melissa’s original post has over 170,000 likes thus far, with her followers also not blind to her changing appearance in recent times.

Many noted how ‘healthy’ she appears, while several also called out Barbra for ‘disgusting’ unsolicited remarks, deeming it none of her business whether Melissa had taken the drug or not.

The Emmy Award winner has spoken openly about her weight loss journey in the past, telling The Guardian in 2016: ‘I’ve been every size in the world, from a six to a 22.’

A few years after she secured her first big role on Gilmore Girls, she attempted a doctor-supervised all-liquid diet, which led to her shedding 70 pounds in just four months.

She’s credited a change in lifestyle for her slimmer figure (Picture: Bauer-Griffin/GC Images)

‘I’d never do that again,’ she later told People. ‘I felt starved and crazy half the time.’

She later started losing pounds in a much safer way, prompting questions about her noticeable weight loss, which is said to have been a further 75 pounds as of 2019.

However, she’s adamant that her ‘secret’ is really just a change in lifestyle.

‘No trick, nothing to tell, just super boring life,’ she said to Extra.

‘You bring it real down, you don’t do anything fun, and you go to bed at 7:30 — that’s the trick.’

Melissa has also emphatically denied undergoing a gastric bypass procedure.

As far as Ozempic is concerned, Melissa isn’t the first star to be caught up in speculation that she’s taken in.

In fact, many of the world’s biggest celebs have been incredibly open about it.

Barbra Streisand
Acting legend Barbra left the internet in shock with her comment (Picture: PA)

Oprah Winfrey has endorsed the drug as a spokesperson for Novo Nordisk, the company that makes Ozempic.

Meanwhile, Keke Palmer revealed she takes Ozempic to manage her polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Amy Schumer has slammed fellow celebs for lying about taking it and claimed she takes it for her endometriosis while, in contrast, comedian Chelsea Handler accidentally took Ozempic, thinking it was a vitamin shot, and experienced nausea and diarrhoea.

Peter Andre hints at unique Welsh name for daughter

Peter Andre has hinted he and his wife Dr Emily MacDonagh might give their baby daughter a Welsh name.

The Mysterious Girl singer, 51, and Emily, 34, welcomed a little girl at the beginning of April but are yet to decide on a name.

Now, the Australian TV personality has hinted they are thinking about a Welsh name for the newborn – in particular, Peter loves the name Seren.

When presented with a list of names, Peter – who has already welcomed two children with Emily, called Millie and Theo – was ‘enthusiastic’ when presented with Seren, meaning ‘star’ in Welsh.

Talking about Welsh names, Peter added in a chat with WalesOnline: ‘I would [choose a Welsh name] because someone else suggested Irish as well.

‘There are similarities, maybe not completely, but even with Carys and Seren, there are a couple of Irish names that were mentioned to me that are similar to that. It’s giving me this thinking outside the box.’

On their name indecision, Peter confessed: ‘Honestly I had one of my cousins ring me going, “Have you got a name but you’re just not telling anyone?” I said, “No, literally.” Really, this happened with my daughter Millie.

‘We called her Rose until we had to register her six weeks later, and then we realised Rose didn’t suit her.”’

Peter married Emily in 2015, and he’s now a dad to five children: son Junior, 18, and 16-year-old daughter Princess with his ex-wife Katie Price, and nine-year-old daughter Amelia and son Theo, six, with Emily.

On April 3, the Mysterious Girl hitmaker announced that Emily had given birth the day before, saying they ‘couldn’t be happier’.

This comes after Peter shared an adorable video of him cuddling the newborn, and fans commented with name suggestions after the couple previously asked for help with the task.

‘Athena or Ophelia’, one wrote.

In the end, Peter says it’s ‘only fair’ to let Emily have the final say on their daughter’s name (Picture: Peter Andre/Instagram)

Replying, Peter said: ‘Athena is also in the running. Not sure how ems feels about it but I LOVE it 🥰’

Replying to someone else, Peter revealed: ‘Charlotte is also in the running. I like Charlie.’

Speaking previously about the delay in naming their baby, Peter told OK! Magazine: ‘We are still no closer to a name for our newest bundle of joy! Anytime Emily and I talk about it, it just gets put aside.

‘She is recovering, after all, so I totally get it.’

He added: ‘We have less than four weeks left before we have to register her. I took our baby for a walk in her pram for the first time to drop Millie and Theo at school.

‘It’s beautiful to do these things all over again.’
